Streamlabs OBS Downfall

What is happening with Streamlabs OBS?

Unbeknownst to many of us light or new streamers, Streamlabs OBS has allegedly been stealing intellectual property, charging for services that are built on open source code, tricking customers into subscribing to their Prime service and refusing to refund any subscription money, using the OBS name without approval and based on some of ex-employees tweets, engaging in general unethical and scummy behaviour.

Yikes, these guys are in deep, you can follow the drama unfolding on Twitter here.

The highlights of the Streamlabs downfall so far

  • The original OBS Project a free open source software for video recording & live streaming, tweeted about how they never authorised Streamlabs OBS tu use OBS in their name:

  • @Lightstream and @Elgato shared tweets showing how Streamlabs OBS stole their intellectual property:

  • Edward Snowden, high profile government document leaker, chimed in with a tweet:

  • Proof that they lifted user reviews from @Lightsream and claimed them their own:

  • Asking potential recruits to do free work as part of the job interview process:

  • Streamlabs OBS attempt some damage control with the following tweet:

  • Here is a good thread by @ShannonZKiller with a lot of info on the historically scummy practices of Streamlabs OBS:

There has been some other stories coming out claiming that Streamlabs OBS purposefully made the “accidental” subscription to their Prime service a prevalent and conscious UI design, firing employees from Marketing that disagreed with shady practices and attempts to acquire corporate sensitive data from partners and Esport organisers.

So, all in all we should all be avoiding these scumbags, I will start looking at StreamElements + OBS Project as an alternative for now.
