Episode 002 | Record Crate Dive

Welcome to the second episode of my electronic music podcast.

Electronic music has been present and influencing my life since my teenage years back when we were loading cassette tapes into walkmans, gather round kids, it is story time ;)

Getting hold of obscure music back then was not easy, we had to rely on retail shops like Tower Records or MixUp to stock some music that we had to buy as there was no Napster (more on that in future episodes) or similar tools, actually the MP3 format didn’t even exist back then so even if you wanted to purchase any music legally you were at the mercy of what the shops in the high street had available.

Fortunately, staff working the shops and clubs were friends (or friends of friends/relatives, remember, I grew up in Mexico so anything goes) so eventually when someone got a hold of anything worthy the copies would just spread, not like wildfire like it did after MP3s and CDs were the norm (eventually everyone had a CD burner at home) but there was some sort of distribution of sorts.

Getting a cassette/CD with unheard music from your favourite DJ/Label was some of the most exciting moments I can remember.

Music discovery has always been the engine that powered my constant search for gigs and adventures, the chase for that rush when a previously undiscovered track hits you the hardest and just the right way, whether it is at a rave, friend’s party or alone at home; it didn’t have to be a new track either, it just had to be new for you or re-discovered. That is a huge principle of music discovery.

For this second episode of the electronic music podcast I had planned (and actually recorded) a chilled Sunday beats mix but after being able to recover around 180 tracks that I had purposefully bought for mixing from Beatport over a decade ago plus a few other tracks that I gathered since my last mix in 2011, I decided to do a one hour DJ/Record Crate Dive Instagram Live stream instead, oh how times have changed!

You can replay the stream on Instagram on IGTV here. I hope you enjoy it, any feedback/suggestions are welcome, you can send them my way via the contact form here, post a comment or message me on Instagram here.
